Introduction

Purpose

As Linux and other free Unices become more prevalent, particularly on university campuses, it is reasonable to expect that there will be greater demand, among both students and departments, for integrating these systems into existing Unix infrastructures. Inspired in a series of conversations on the mailing list of the Ames Area Free Unix Group, this document is intended to address the needs of an administrator wishing to ``Vincentize'' a Linux system. It is hoped that it will prove useful to the Iowa State Unix community, and perhaps to administrators at other universities as well.

Assumptions

Throughout this document, the assumption is made that the target system is running RedHat Linux 6.0 or a comparable derivative. This is not intended to dissuade administrators of other systems; however, the necessary software is more readily available in RedHat Package (rpm) format, and this process has only been tested on a RedHat system. If you are comfortable building from source code or know how to install from RPMs onto your non-RedHat distribution, then this guide will still be useful for you.

This document has been provided as a service to the Unix community, and there is no warranty, express or implied, of its fitness for any purpose. If you are unable to configure your Linux system as a Project Vincent workstation, above all, please don't bother the comp center about it.
